More than half of pregnant women try to induce their own birth with natural methods

A few months ago we explained some of the most commonly used traditional methods of trying to give birth when you see the days go by and the probable date of delivery begins to fall behind.

Most of these methods have little scientific support and if you keep talking about them it is more by word of mouth than anything else. Health professionals, in fact, comment that of all the methods used, only one could have some impact on the future of childbirth.

The case is that a recent survey conducted by scientists from the Ohio State University in the US 201 women who had just given birth showed that More than half of pregnant women try to induce their own birth with the aforementioned natural methods.

The most used methods, which are the ones discussed in the previous post (and some more), are those of walking, having sex, eating spicy things, stimulating the nipples, taking infusions, laxatives, doing intense exercise, acupuncture sessions, etc.

Comparing the group of women who tried to induce their birth with those who simply waited for the time to come, they saw that the women in the first group could be defined as younger, first-time and more likely women to give birth without resorting to Caesarean section. Of all of them, in addition, the majority stated that they had not asked the doctor about it, but that the advice had come through family or friends.

Jonathan Schaffir, responsible for the study, explained that there is little or no research that supports the effectiveness and safety of the methods described, except perhaps nipple stimulation, well "It is known that this stimulation causes the release of oxytocin, a hormone that can cause contractions and, therefore, could facilitate delivery". However, it does not recommend such a method because "Contractions are difficult to control and can become disadvantageous if they are too strong".

I suppose that you will think like me that his statements do not make much sense, if then a woman goes to a hospital and to induce labor they administer synthetic oxytocin in much larger quantities, generating much stronger contractions than the “too strong” they could be for stimulating the nipples. In fact, many women have tried to cause childbirth by breastfeeding the eldest son with greater constancy, almost chasing him to hold on to the tit, without much success, so it gives me that this method is not too effective either.

What do you think? Do you think any of the typical methods to induce labor is effective? I personally I believe a lot in walking and walkingOf course, there is no study to confirm that it works.
