"It's about capacity", a successful campaign to promote the inclusion of disabled children

Disabled children have more problems than anyone else in their lives. To the physical and often economic limitations are added social, since unfortunately there is discrimination that keeps them from leading a "normal" life. Therefore These are important campaigns that raise public awareness about the needs of children with disabilities.

When these types of actions have been carried out, positive results have been proven, and this is demonstrated the campaign to promote the inclusion of disabled children "It's about capacity", an initiative that has the support of UNICEF and the Government of Montenegro and that began in 2010.

The campaign has continuity during the following years, and has the participation of national and international organizations of the European Union, United Nations, embassies, associations of mothers and fathers ...

The purpose of helping to change attitudes and practices of public opinion towards children with disabilities seemed to bear fruit and a survey found that all the effort was not in vain. According to the survey, one in four citizens has positively changed their behavior towards children with disabilities as a result of the campaign.

Citizens expressed, even before the end of the campaign, that they communicate more easily with children and people with disabilities. In addition, the percentage of people who consider children with disabilities to be valuable members of society, like everyone else, has grown by about 18% since the campaign began.

Even the results go further, because although it is hard to believe, before there were more people who did not accept normally that children with disabilities and without it live in the same city or street, share the same classroom, play together or even become friends.

In short, we see that much remains to be done to accept and integrate children with disabilities, and it is not only about resources or infrastructures, policies and laws (which also): the mentality of "ordinary" people, of neighbors, colleagues, family ... can take them away from a normal life.

That's why we love knowing that campaigns such as "It's about capacity" to promote the inclusion of disabled children be a success and help that necessary integration. That they help the well-being and full development of children, because they are their rights, as they are for any child.
