Punset documentary: Emotional education from the womb

In the latest Network program, Eduard Punset interviews the researcher Vivette Glover, a specialist in perinatal psychobiology at Imperial College London. The documentary is entitled "Emotional education from the womb", and we discover the close relationship between emotions and life in the womb.

It focuses on the fact that, during the nine months of pregnancy, the woman is closely monitored, with multiple controls and health tests for the mother and the fetus. However, little is taken into account the emotional state of the pregnant woman. And, as we know, stress can affect the future baby greatly.

The documentary stops to demonstrate that importance of the emotional factor in the mother, how it affects the baby, and shows us examples such as the 9/11 episode and its consequences on subsequent births. It also tells us about the importance of the couple in the well-being of the pregnant woman, an aspect that should not be downplayed.

Or the influence of the mother's work in increasing stress. It also brings us the interesting conclusions about the study on the stress of babies at birth. And it is that the way in which the baby develops in the womb and is born affects the child throughout life, and it is a short time ago when it is beginning to scientifically investigate the effects of stress on the fetus.

Vivette Glover tells us that if a mother is anxious, her cortisol level, the stress hormone, is higher and this hormone would penetrate the placenta and reach the baby, negatively affecting her. If the mother is more anxious, there is more cortisol that crosses the placenta and affects the brain's development of the fetus. That influence of stress on the fetus would be different, too, depending on the time of pregnancy in which we are.

The report involves a emotional education approach, so forgotten in our days, not only during pregnancy but during any stage of life. Also very forgotten, sadly because of its importance in the later development of children, during childhood, in our relationships with children.

The documentary was aired on October 4, lasts 28 minutes and can be viewed from the RTVE website or from here. Also from this link of Smart Planet, apart from the video, we find the transcript of the interview with Vivette Glover.

In short, Eduard Punset leaves us with a magnificent work of dissemination in this case by “Emotional education from the womb” program. It is worth seeing.
