This is one wooden delivery chair, handmade. When I saw her for the first time, I loved it and aroused my curiosity. The truth is that its simplicity seems precious to me and the idea that it has served for children to reach the world filled me with tenderness. I researched and thanks to a person who knew the craftsman I came to him.
His name is Andrés Capilla and he is craftsman In Mas de las Matas (Teruel), a small town of Bajo Aragón with about 1500 inhabitants, it has been working on wood for 40 years. The issue of childbirth chairs is something more recent for him, since he has been doing them for about two years, at home and in a very artisanal way and with much love. It is made of beech or pine. And the truth is quite cheap.
He was born 53 years ago, at home, a farmhouse of the Turolense Mastership. He has been working with wood for 40 years, since he started working as an apprentice in Alcorisa with 13. He does all kinds of carpentry: from kitchens to stairs, through beams ... or childbirth chairs. As he says: "In the rural world you have to know and be willing to do everything."
Some village fathers wanted a delivery chair for the birth at his son's house, they proposed the idea and found it interesting. Now, that first chair is in the Regional Hospital of Alcañiz, the parents gave it up so that it can also be used there.
In the photo he has sent us, he poses proudly carrying in his arms a little boy who came to be born in a chair made by him. The fact that in something made by his hands a child comes to life is surely a very beautiful feeling.
