A "natural" cesarean that mimics vaginal delivery

For some time, mothers and fathers have been crying out for a more personalized and humane treatment when giving birth. Luckily, for some time (not much), the wishes of mothers accepting birth plans, remodeling units and rooms and training gynecologists and midwives to act based on some are being taken into account in some Spanish hospitals more respectful protocols with pregnant women.

In the case of a cesarean delivery, the protocol is different and the priority is the health of the mother and the baby, leaving aside the more human perspective (the couple can not usually be present, mother and child separation of up to two hours or more, etc.).

In Britain, however, they have developed a new caesarean approach "focused on women" that incorporates many aspects of vaginal delivery. Professor Nicholas M. Fisk and his team have carried out a procedure trying to emulate the experience of a vaginal delivery. "Vaginal birth has evolved significantly in the last two decades and now much importance is given to the parents' experience and the early bond."

The caesarean section has varied little and the priority is speed and resuscitation, when according to the professor they are not so necessary in caesarean sections under epidural anesthesia and without complications.

The procedure involves waiting for the contractions to occur so that the baby's lungs are cleansed better. "as in vaginal delivery". The vision of the parents at the time of the incision is covered in the first instance until the baby leaves the head. Then the area is cleaned and from that moment The woman's partner can continue the delivery.

The child's shoulders are relaxed "and the baby usually pulls out his arms in an expansive gesture"At this time the mother can see half of the baby and observe the rest of the birth. The doctor places the baby on the mother in skin-to-skin contact to favor bonding.

According to Professor Fisk there were "very few negative reactions" between the parents and the hospital staff approved the concept.

In any case, it is a very new technique that must be evaluated with clinical trials since there are still no results or safety data that justify its use.

Caesarean section is a surgical intervention with more risks for the mother and the baby than vaginal delivery, but there are situations in which it is necessary. It often disrupts parents' plans and breaks the vision and expectations that had been made of their birth.

That is why it seems to me to be a very appropriate procedure (if the final data is favorable) since making the parents part of the moment emotionally brings them closer to their baby, makes them live the intervention with less stress (I imagine) and skin-to-skin contact with the mother is from undeniable mutual benefits.
