Iodine in breastfeeding, also essential

In Babies and more, the importance of iodine in pregnancy has often been discussed, and I want to delve a little deeper into the subject, because yes, it is essential in pregnancy, but It is also in breastfeeding.

The purpose of iodine supplementation in breastfeeding is to ensure that the baby receives the iodine it needs through breast milk. The amount of iodine in the milk depends on the mother's intake, so it is necessary to take into account how much iodine is being taken. A low supply of iodine in the baby can cause goiter (enlarged thyroid) that can cause respiratory problems and / or swallowing. The lack of iodine also causes delayed development of the Central Nervous System as well as in the growth and maturation of the baby's bones.

To ensure the supply of suitable iodine, iodized salt should be used exclusively for the preparation of food, frequently consume sea fish and, In case of pregnancy or lactation, take an iodine supplementation of 150-200 micrograms.

The general population has enough to take 3 grams of iodized salt, however pregnant women need 5 grams of iodized salt to receive the iodine they need and babies would need 2 grams of salt. But babies do not drink salt, so iodine reaches them through breast milk.

Studies carried out by autonomous communities show that in 14 of the 17 communities studied, iodine levels were moderately low to very low.

According to WHO, a pregnant or nursing woman needs 200 mcgr / day, although, for example, in the aforementioned population studies it was seen that 250-300 mcgr / day is necessary in Madrid.

If you are breastfeeding a baby and becoming pregnant again, the amount of iodine needed increases. The logical thing in this situation is to double the amount of iodine to take (400 mcgr / day).
